Team Lake/Mason Practice Success!!!
[BLACKSBURG, VA] Team Lake/Mason with NRUSA U8 held a successful practice this week. Players met at Beeks Elem. with sunny skies overhead and the verdant green of an unworn pitch beneath their cleats. There was a quick team huddle to introduce the coaches before starting.
The coaches explained there would be 5 phases to practice:
a) Stretching and Warm-Ups
b) Skill Drill - Offense
c) Skill Drill - Defense
d) Scrimmage
e) Team Huddle
Practice began with two warm-ups: Simon the Fullback Says (a solo dribbling, shooting, and listening variant on Simon Says), and Ouch! (a shooting, dribbling, and recovery warm-up where players try to hit the coach with their soccer balls).
At this point the team divided into 2 squads for skill drills. The Defensive Skill Drill focused on the Fullback position, and was run by Coach Heather Mason. 3 techniques were emphasized: running backward,
obstructing
the goal, and when to challenge. The Offensive Skill Drill run by Coach Lake taught the fundamental Power Shot, where a player learns to kick with power without backing up or pausing, and how to move up field in a Diamond Formation.
The coaches look to improve the Scrimmage experience. Expect them to stop play more often during future scrimmages to emphasize skills taught earlier in practice, and also earlier in the year.
At the end of practice the team huddled together and parents were invited to form a second, larger circle around the players. Players reviewed what they learned, a team name was discussed (not decided), and uniforms were handed out. Coach Lake will email 2 surverys soon: one to vote for the Team Name, and another to sign-up for game day snacks.
